François Picard

Ethnomusicologist, musician, researcher

Professor of analytical ethnomusicology at Sorbonne University and researcher at the IreMUS Musicology Research Institute .

François Picard worked for fifteen years as an intermittent performer. He has published three books, dozens of articles and chapters and around thirty CDs. He is currently president of the French Society of Ethnomusicology . A disciple of Tran Van Khê, a former student of Iannis Xenakis and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he plays the xiao flute and the sheng mouth organ in the Fleur de Prunus ensemble, which he directs and collaborates with contemporary composers and the XVIII-21 ensemble, the nomadic baroque .

François Picard develops, practices and teaches a generalized musicology , which deals with questions of scales and modes, rhythms and durations, forms and textures. He thus publishes precise case studies and general texts, and is concerned with a musicology of what we hear.
