Ensemble de Mallakastër
Singers
The Mallakastër Ensemble is a polyphonic vocal ensemble from Albania.
When working with Erik Marchand, he sang in a reduced configuration with Guri Rookal, Vladimir "Ladi" Shehaj, Ali Shametaj, and Fatmir Tahiral. These four singers are among the essential interpreters of the polyphony of Mallakastër, in southern Albania.
Richly decorated, willingly dissonant to our ears, these a cappella polyphonies represent one of the most captivating aspects of the rural culture of this region. It is a multi-part song based on a drone ( iso ) which serves as a tonal base. Each ensemble includes a soloist, the marrësi (or taker), the kthyësi (or turner) who answers in a chopped style, the hedhësi (thrower or thrower) who introduces himself into the polyphony at certain moments, and the voice which leads the drone.
