Ashish Sankrityayan is an internationally renowned Dhrupad singer of the Dagar lineage. He trained for many years with the Dagar brothers, who have been transmitting Dhrupad for 25 generations and have given it a particularly refined and highly subtle style.
He lives in Bhopal, India, where he has been directing the Dhrupad Kendra, the state academy of Dhrupad singing, since 2011, while pursuing a career as an international artist.
He began learning the sitar and singing as a child. While studying mathematics and physics, he discovered Dhrupad and studied it with several masters of the Dagar tradition, in particular Ustads Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar.
After more than 20 years of training and personal research in the subtle and refined style of the Dagar school, he in turn became a master of this deep meditative singing.
His great interest and his studies of the theoretical and musicological bases of Dhrupad led him to teach in several universities as well as to write many articles.
In parallel with his activity as a concert performer, Ashish Sankrityayan leads training courses where he shares his experience as a singer and his profound knowledge. He has also just created a university course in Dhrupad singing in his school. It is undeniable that as much by his quality as a singer, as a teacher and researcher, Ashish Sankrityayan gives an extremely valuable contribution to this demanding vocal art that is Dhrupad.
